OFF97: Utility to Completely Remove Remaining Office 97 Files and Registry Entries

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows

A utility that helps you completely remove Office is available. The Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility removes most of the files and Windows registry settings that remain on the computer after you remove Office. This utility is designed to be run after you run the Setup program for Office and click Remove All to remove Office. This utility is also designed to be used on stand-alone computers or workstations.

NOTE: If there are no other programs installed in your Microsoft Office folder (Microsoft Publisher 98, for example), make sure you delete the Microsoft Office folder from your Program Files folder before you run the Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility. The Microsoft Office folder and Office fonts are not removed with this utility.

NOTE: Microsoft does not recommend running the Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility on a computer on which Office 2000 has been installed. This utility is not designed for use with Office 2000.

The following updates have been made to the Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility:
  • Version 2.0 dated August 10, 1998:

Detection of the operating system (Microsoft Windows 95 and later and, Microsoft Windows NT). Running Windows 98, the file Mfc40.dll is not removed due to a conflict with the Microsoft System Information program. Running Windows NT, the file Comcat.dll is not removed due to a conflict with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 when using the Active Desktop.
